Toyota is testing an electric car with a manual transmission

Last month, the updated roadmap for zero-emission models included a powerful vehicle that is due to be available by 2026.

In December 2021, Toyota held a media briefing to showcase at least 15 electric vehicles in concept form. Some of them have turned into road models, but there is one that has not yet seen the light of day in production.

Given this, it should come as no great surprise that Toyota is already testing an electric sports car. The company’s chairman, Akio Toyoda, told Autocar that he had the opportunity to drive the prototype, but he is not sure whether the project will be realized in three years. The former CEO said that driving should be fun to be worthy of the GR badge, even if it doesn’t have an internal combustion engine.

The top manager said that one of the goals is to install a manual transmission with a clutch pedal. A high-performance EV will also make “engine noise even if you don’t smell gasoline.” The resemblance to a conventional sports car will be so significant that people will not be able to tell whether it is a vehicle with a traditional engine or an electric one.
