Turkey tests kamikaze drone ŞİMŞEK, which is launched from the strike drone Anka S

Turkey has successfully tested the ŞİMŞEK Turkish Aerospace barrage ammunition, which is launched from another unmanned aerial vehicle.

This was stated by Ismail Demir, head of the Turkish Defense Industry Department. According to the director of the department, the kamikaze drone successfully completed the task.

Initially, ŞİMŞEK was designed as an air target to test the capabilities of land and sea air defense systems. It was designed with a catapult system that can be installed on ships.

In 2020, ŞİMŞEK was integrated into Turkish Aerospace’s Anka S drone. In 2021, it was converted into a barrage of munitions by installing a warhead and a Roketsan guidance system.

ŞİMŞEK can now attack the opponent himself. The kamikaze drone supports autonomous flight and has GPS guidance, which allows you to destroy targets over long distances. Barrage ammunition can deliver explosives up to 70 km and stay in the air for up to 45 minutes. The maximum payload is 5 kg.

ŞİMŞEK is equipped with a turbojet engine. The development of the air target at that time began in 2009. Last year, the CEO of Turkish Aerospace announced plans to produce hundreds of barrage ammunition each year.
