Ukraine has started modernizing T-64 tanks to the BV 2022 model (video)
Six modernized tanks were captured on video by a Ukrainian soldier. The T-64 received modern communications, optics, and a digital onboard panel.
At one of Ukraine’s military training grounds, 6 T-64BV tanks of the 2022 model were spotted at once, which indicates that the capacities are available. This was reported by Militarnyi with reference to social media.
One of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ tank units has at least two tank platoons with T-64BV tanks of the 2022 model. The video shows 6 modernized cars at once. Since the tank does not have a commander’s machine gun in its remote-controlled turret, the authors assume that the T-64 is at a training ground.
What is known about the T-64BV model 2022
The T-64BV tank of the 2022 model was presented shortly before the full-scale invasion of Kharkiv. It is a continuation of the previous versions of the 2017 and 2019 BW. The old Soviet systems were replaced with modern ones. In particular, the gunner’s sight was replaced with a TPN-1TPV, which has a thermal imaging matrix with a target detection range of up to 6 km. Some tanks could have received an alternative sight with a night vision device.
In addition to targeting equipment, the T-64BV of the 2022 model received a modern L3 Harris digital station and a CH-4215 satellite navigation device. The authors also highlight the digital dashboard of the driver, which replaced the analog indicators.
Visually, the machine differs from other modernizations by the anti-cumulative side grille that covers the engine and transmission compartment area. The tank was also fitted with an armor panel that protects the commander’s machine gun and ammunition box from debris, along with additional anti-shrapnel armor protection for the external fuel tanks. And the Luna infrared searchlight was removed from the front of the tower, and the area was covered with additional dynamic protection.
It is likely that the T-64BV of the 2022 model will be brought up to the level of the restored unmodernized machines. They were first spotted in the Ukrainian army in early 2023. So far, it is known that Poland is repairing Ukrainian T-64s and the Czech Republic is repairing them.
As a reminder, on February 8, 2022, Ukraine tested the modernized T-64BV of the 2022 model.
On July 6, the Armed Forces of Ukraine received an APC OT-64 SKOT of Czech-Polish design.
