Ukraine is planning to revive the microelectronics industry, including the production of components for high-precision weapons
Ukraine is preparing a program to create a network of companies for computer-aided design of microchips. Its production capacity can reach up to 50 thousand chips per month within three years after the project launch.
This was stated by Deputy Minister of Digital Transformation for European Integration Valeria Ionan at the Presentation of the Global Innovation Vision of Ukraine, writes NV Business.
“We will meet the needs of the domestic market and create a basis for exports,” she said.
If the strategy for reviving the industry is approved, the Ministry of Digital Transformation plans to start looking for a partner for chip production in 2024. The project is scheduled to be implemented in 2025.
According to Ionan, Ukraine will create a network of fabless (a company that does not have its own factory) companies for automated chip design, which will allow it to enter the chip market and take a position in the global semiconductor market.
For his part, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov said that the Ministry of Digital Transformation plans to develop and present a Ukrainian chip in 2024. He added that the ministry is working with various companies in this direction, but has not disclosed any other details so far.
In his turn, President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Anatoliy Zagorodnyi in the program Security Talks said that the institutions of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine will be involved in the revival of microelectronics production in Ukraine.
“Over the past 30 years, microelectronics has not developed in the country. A lot of progress has been made in this area at the international level, and we need to catch up and catch up. It is clear that today not everything can be bought, not everything will be sold to us, so we need to rely primarily on our own strength. And this is exactly what the Academy will do – revive the microelectronics industry, because the need for this is extremely high,” says the President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
Zahorodniy noted that the development and production of components for infrared homing missile heads, which are needed by the Ukrainian Defense Forces, is particularly relevant.
