Ukraine offers to make military buggies out of broken Toyota Prius police cars

OJSC ‘Ukrbusbusprom’ offers to start mass production of military buggies in Ukraine using units from broken police Toyota Prius.

The Ukrainian research institute ‘Ukrbusbusprom’, which specialized in the development of buses, analyzed the military experience of many countries and proposes to launch mass production of tactical buggies of its own design TUR KB 02 ‘Mamai’ in Ukraine.

The next version of the buggy with a hybrid power drive TUR KV 02N is already in the development stage, which has a drive mode either with an internal combustion engine or exclusively on electric traction with a range of 10-20 km off-road, which ensures a much lower probability of the enemy detecting the machine in infrared and sound frequency spectrum.

Moreover, in order to make the production of hybrid buggies cheaper, Ukrbusprom has an interesting proposal – to use a hybrid power plant from damaged Toyota Prius, which were used by the patrol police, but are now simply rusting after numerous road accidents.

As noted in ‘Ukrbusprom’, the tour KB 02 ‘Mamai’ buggy is as close as possible in terms of tactical and technical characteristics to the most popular model of this class in NATO – Polaris Defency and regulatory requirements for wheeled combat vehicles of the front edge of the British military standard STAN – DEF 23- 06 [ 21] (clearance, suspension travel, payload, specific power). 2 execution modifications have been developed – for reconnaissance and fighting armored vehicles.

Both all-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive transmission options are provided. In order to increase maneuverability (minimization of the turning radius), an auxiliary (parking) brake system of the front axle with a hydraulic drive is used. For the evacuation of the seriously wounded from the battlefield, it is also possible to place 2 medical stretchers. A single-axle trailer with the same type of suspension and a clearance of up to 300 kg is under development (at the request of the military).

The estimated needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine for ultralight buggies of the TUR KB 02 ‘Mamai’ type are about 600-800 units, without taking into account inevitable losses and the corresponding replenishment. This necessitates the deployment of industrial production of machines of this type and the corresponding defense order. In addition, Ukrbusprom is confident that Ukraine would be able to produce such buggies and offers its own production site, or to engage several industrial manufacturers at once.
