Ukrainian electronic warfare disables 20 Russian missiles during latest massive attack: ISW calls it a turning point

Disabling more than 20 missiles with “active electronic warfare countermeasures” could be a breakthrough for Ukraine’s electronic warfare capabilities, ISW believes.

Military analysts say that electronic warfare has usually been credited with disabling Russian drones, but not missile systems.

ISW has previously assessed that Russia’s campaign of strikes against Ukraine and Ukraine’s adaptation to counter Russia’s new strike systems are part of a broader tactical and technological offense-defense race between long-range aviation and air defense capabilities.

Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yuriy Ihnat noted that the Russian missile strike on January 13 was similar to the strike that Russian troops had carried out on January 8 and on previous occasions. The Institute for the Study of War believes that Ihnat’s words indicate that Ukrainian forces can recognize patterns in repeated Russian attacks and, accordingly, innovate and adapt to them.

  • During Russia’s combined air attack on Ukraine on the morning of January 13, more than two dozen Russian missiles and drones failed to reach their targets due to self-detonation, hitting unpopulated areas, and effective work of Ukrainian electronic warfare.
