US guided-missile destroyer USS Thomas Hudner shoots down a drone launched from Yemen

A US guided-missile destroyer was once again forced to use its weapons in the Middle East. A few weeks ago, the USS Carney (DDG 64) was shooting down drones and missiles. On November 15, 2023, the USS Thomas Hudner (DDG 116) was launched.

The guided-missile destroyer USS Thomas Hudner (DDG 116) was in transit through the waters of the Red Sea. The crew engaged in combat and shot down a drone flying toward the ship. The drone was launched from Yemen.

The USS Thomas Hudner (DDG 116) operates in the area of responsibility of the US Central Command separately from the Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group. Ford (CVN 78). The rest of the warehouse is in the Mediterranean Sea, i.e. in the area of responsibility of the European Command.

It is not yet clear what type of munitions were used by the USS Thomas Hudner (DDG 116). The ship’s arsenal includes the Mk 41 vertical launch system, which allows the use of Standard family interceptors.

Last month, the USS Carney (DDG 64) deployed the Standard Missile 2. The Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, which was also in the Red Sea, destroyed 15 drones and four missiles launched from Yemen toward Israel in a few hours.
