US Strengthens Philippines with F-16s Amid China Threat

Washington has approved a major military deal to sell 20 modern F-16 fighter jets to the Philippines. This strategic decision aims to enhance the defensive capabilities of the US ally in the Indo-Pacific region and deter China’s aggressive policy in the South China Sea.

Strategic Partnership and Regional Security

The US State Department has approved a major military agreement to supply the Philippines with 20 modern F-16 fighters worth over $5.58 billion. This decision aims to strengthen the defense capabilities of an important US strategic partner in the Indo-Pacific region amid growing tensions with China, as reported by The Defense Post.

According to State Department officials, this agreement will significantly improve the Philippine Air Force’s maritime surveillance and air defense capabilities. Although official Manila has not yet confirmed the contract, the country has long expressed interest in acquiring American F-16s.

Military cooperation between the countries has intensified significantly since Ferdinand Marcos took office as president in 2022. In December last year, the Philippines announced plans to acquire the American Typhon missile system, which drew negative reactions from Beijing and accusations of provoking an arms race in the region.

Against the backdrop of China’s large-scale military exercises around Taiwan, Philippines Armed Forces Commander Romeo Brauner stated his country’s ‘inevitable’ involvement in case of a potential conflict. He also announced joint military exercises with the US in northern Luzon – the territory closest to Taiwan.

During his visit to Manila last week, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegset confirmed Washington’s intentions to strengthen deterrence against China in the region, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio assured the United States’ unwavering support for the Philippines.

The strengthening of the Philippines’ military capability through the acquisition of F-16s demonstrates the seriousness of US intentions to contain Chinese expansion in the region. This agreement not only strengthens bilateral relations between the countries but also significantly affects the balance of power in the Indo-Pacific region.
