WhatsApp stops supporting some Android and iOS smartphones from October 24: reasons

From today, WhatsApp will stop supporting Android smartphones with operating systems 5.0 and below, as well as iPhones with iOS below 12.

This decision means that there will be no new updates and security patches for owners of devices with these OS versions.

To find out whether a particular device is subject to this restriction, you need to visit the “About Phone” section (accessed through “Settings” on smartphones running the “green robot” and through “Settings” => “General” on iPhones).

Starting tomorrow, WhatsApp will be supported on operating system versions starting from

  • 5.1 for Android;
  • 12.0 iOS for iPhones;
  • 2.5.0 KaiOS for JioPhone and all others.

To use WhatsApp updates, you need to upgrade to a more modern smartphone. If this is not done, the messenger will continue to work, but the WhatsApp team cannot guarantee security.
