X/Twitter marks Musk’s post about Iran and US military bases as disinformation – the billionaire deletes the mark and says it’s a “joke”
X’s new moderation system seems to be working well, as even some of Elon Musk’s posts are rightly labeled as disinformation.
After the acquisition of Twitter, Musk slightly changed the moderation system on the platform, dismissing the trust and security teams and instead assigning content control to the Community Notes tool. The feature allows users to add notes to posts that contain inaccurate or false information – those notes that are rated as useful by the majority of people will be displayed next to the post.
Despite the fact that after the Hamas attacks on Israel, the EU expressed doubts about the quality of moderation and talked about the high amount of disinformation on X, it turned out that Community Notes works quite well (or at least fairly) – marking even Elon Musk’s own posts as false or inaccurate.
Recently, he posted on his profile a map of Iran with flags of alleged US military bases around the country and the caption “Iran wants war – look how they have brought their country closer to our military bases.” At the same time, the flags were placed on the territories of countries where US military bases are not present, including Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, and Pakistan, which Musk first wrote about in his comments and later began to mark with the Community Notes tool.
Interestingly, Musk’s post with the disinformation label did not stay up for long, as the billionaire apparently deleted it himself and wrote that the post was “almost a joke.”
“I like being tagged – it proves that no one is exempt from correction! Obviously, it’s a meme joke, but there is more than a grain of truth in it.”
