X (Twitter) will launch video calls – you can call anyone without using a number

In an interview with CNBC, Linda Yaccarino, who recently succeeded Elon Musk as CEO of Twitter, spoke in more detail about the social network’s rebranding and announced the features that will be available soon.

In particular, X will soon launch video calls – as Yakkarino notes, users will be able to call anyone on the social network via video, even if they don’t know the number.

On the eve of the interview, X designer Andrea Conway also posted a message about video calls, noting that she had already tested the new feature.

Linda Yaccarino, who previously headed NBCUniversal’s global advertising business, joined Twitter in the midst of the social network’s changes. While Blue upgrade holders were able to post longer tweets and videos or post job announcements, regular users faced more and more restrictions.

These changes are a reflection of Musk’s broader strategy to turn Twitter into an X-app: with freedom of speech, payment features, and earnings for authors. And the rebranding doesn’t seem to be scaring off users too much, who are sometimes expressing dissatisfaction – according to Musk, the number of monthly X users reached a new high in 2023 with 541 million users (up from 368 million in 2022).

In an interview, Iaccarino echoed Musk’s sentiments, noting that she joined the company realizing that the goal was transformation:

“When Elon announced that I was joining the company…he was very clear that I was joining him to help him turn Twitter into X, the app for everything.”
