Chinese electronics manufacturer Xiaomi has unveiled its debut electric car, a five-seater sedan with a panoramic glass roof.

Permits indicate that the electric car will be branded Beijing Xiaomi SU7, and its production will be carried out by the state-owned Beijing Automotive Group. Earlier, Xiaomi said that its electric car would be officially launched in the first half of next year.

The Beijing Xiaomi SU7 electric car can have one or two engines and is equipped with batteries manufactured by Contemporary Amperex Technology and BYD. As an option, a lidar can be installed in the upper part of the windshield for advanced driving assistance.

Xiaomi SU7 has dimensions of 4997x1963x1455 mm and a wheelbase of 3000 mm. It will have two wheel options: 19 and 20 inches. The rear-wheel-drive version has an engine power of 220 kW, and the all-wheel-drive version has 495 kW (220 kW + 275 kW).

For the basic version, the curb weight is 1980 kg, and the top speed is limited to 210 km/h. The top-end configuration weighs 2205 kg and has a top speed of 265 km/h. There are three versions in total: SU7, SU7 Pro and SU7 Max. Some models will have an active rear wing. Mass production is expected to begin in December 2023 and deliveries in February 2024.

Xiaomi’s electric car is an important link in the company’s plan to create a “comprehensive ecosystem” for its customers. The company has already updated its operating system for smartphones and other home appliances to include electric vehicles. This will allow users to manage all types of Xiaomi products within a single platform.

Earlier this year, Xiaomi registered the Modena trademark for its first car. In September 2022, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun announced that Xiaomi’s first test car rolled off the assembly line on schedule, with winter testing scheduled for December.

In March 2021, the board of directors of the Chinese electrical manufacturer Xiaomi approved its entry into the automotive market, and in September the company announced the registration of a subsidiary, Xiaomi EV Company Limited, with a registered capital of 10 billion yuan ($1.55 billion).
