Xiaomi may abandon Android: the company is developing its own mobile OS

Perhaps the history of sanctions against Huawei prompted Xiaomi to think about its own operating system. According to recent reports, Xiaomi is developing its own operating system compatible with Android. The upcoming new operating system is expected to be used on a variety of devices, including smartphones, tablets, and wearables.

So far, nothing is known about the development of MIOS, as the future OS was jokingly dubbed by analogy with the existing MIUI firmware in Xiaomi phones. We should not expect it to appear in the coming years, if at all.

Xiaomi’s project is similar to what Huawei did when its business was hit hard by US sanctions and it lost access to key Google services. Huawei released HarmonyOS several years ago, and it is installed on several commercial devices.

There are rumors that Xiaomi will launch its own system in China first, and that Huawei will be its first major competitor.

Google now provides the Android operating system for Xiaomi smartphones. Although Android is an open-source operating system, it is practically useless without Google services, and the company does not open these services to competing operating systems. In China, this is a minor issue, but around the world, people generally don’t respond well to Android phones without Google services.
