YouTube has announced three principles of AI: it can exist as a creative tool, but should not violate copyright

With the support of performers, songwriters, and producers, as well as Universal Music Group, YouTube has announced three principles for how AI-generated content and copyright should interact on the platform. Famous artists, authors, and rights holders have joined YouTube’s AI Music Incubator initiative to explore the possibilities of interacting with AI.

Universal’s group of artists will “research, experiment, and provide feedback on musical instruments and AI-related products that YouTube is exploring.” When new YouTube tools for working with AI are launched, artists will study their capabilities and help the service shape further interaction with AI.

YouTube has not yet shared specific details about the development of its own AI tools. YouTube will also improve Content ID in line with the development of this initiative.

YouTube CEO Neil Mohan has announced three principles that will help combine AI creativity with musicians’ rights:

  • “Principle No. 1: artificial intelligence exists, and we will embrace it responsibly together with our music partners. As generative AI opens up ambitious new forms of creativity, YouTube and our partners in the music industry agree to build on our long history of collaboration and responsibly embrace this rapidly evolving field. Our goal is to work with the music industry to empower creativity in ways that strengthen our shared commitment to responsible innovation.
  • Principle #2: Artificial intelligence opens up a new era of creative expression, but it must be properly protected and open up opportunities for music partners who choose to participate. We continue our strong history of protecting creativity on YouTube. Over the years, we have invested heavily in systems that help balance the interests of copyright owners with those of the creative community.
  • Principle #3: We have developed an industry-leading content trust and security policy. We will scale it to meet the challenges of AI. We’ve spent years investing in these policies to help protect the YouTube community. We also apply these security measures to content created by artificial intelligence. Generative AI systems can exacerbate the existing challenges of copyright abuse, disinformation, spam, etc. But artificial intelligence can also be used to identify such content. We will continue to invest in AI-powered technology to help us protect our community of viewers, songwriters, and performers – from identifying content to developing and deploying systems that keep our platform safe behind the scenes. We are committed to expanding this work even further.”

The cooperation between Google and Universal to regulate AI creativity became known in early August. The stage of cooperation reached is more concrete, but far from final.
