YouTube tests AI feature for video annotations

So far, there is a limited amount of English-language content

The YouTube team continues to experiment with new AI-powered features, most recently the ability to create short video annotations on the platform, which is currently being tested with a small number of users in a limited number of English-language videos. The administration announced the start of testing on a special page of the support website.

Annotations are not intended to replace the video description added by the content creators themselves. As the developers explain, the functionality is intended to improve the user experience by providing a brief description of the video content to help users decide whether to open it. The idea is to allow users to find out about the content of a video without having to run it.

The feature works automatically in the background and displays content summaries both on the video viewing page and in search results. There are no screenshots available yet, so we can only guess what the automatic AI annotations on YouTube videos look like.

According to TechCrunch, third-party AI tools for annotating YouTube videos have been around for a long time. Among them are Clipnote.ai, Skipit.ai, and Scrivvy. However, all of them, according to some authors, do not work well with large videos.

It is also not known what technologies underlie the function. It is likely that algorithms from the Google Bard chatbot are responsible for its operation. The developers do not specify how long the testing will last. YouTube is constantly experimenting with various new features. If everything goes well, the feature will appear on YouTube in a while and become available to everyone.
