Zaporizzhya: SBU detains sniper who planned assassination attempt on Ukrainian Armed Forces command (photos, video)

A sniper was detained who was supposed to attempt an assassination attempt on the command of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in Zaporizhzhia on May 9. He was one of the members of an agent network discovered and disclosed by the SBU counterintelligence.

The sniper with the call sign “Phantom” is a former military man who is skilled in shooting with a silent sniper rifle “Vintorez”, which is produced in Russia and often used by special forces of the occupying country.

“According to the available data, it was with this rifle that the “Phantom” was supposed to attempt to assassinate the command of the Armed Forces combat units fighting at the southern front,” the SBU said.

“Phantom temporarily ceased operations after a failed attempted assassination attempt and the arrest of its accomplices. But later he received a new task from a representative of the FSB – to adjust fire on the frontline positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces using Russian flamethrower systems “Solntsepek”.

“To collect intelligence on the locations of Ukrainian defenders, the suspect tried to use his acquaintances from the frontline areas of the region in the dark. As a result of a multi-stage special operation, SBU officers detained the Russian agent and thus prevented an enemy attack on the frontline units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” the SBU said.

It is known that the offender faces life imprisonment.
