Self-driving cars may appear on UK roads by 2026
UK Transport Minister Mark Harper said that self-driving cars could be on the country’s roads by 2026, reports Reuters.
According to Harper, cars with full autonomous driving technology are not currently allowed on British roads, but a bill on automated vehicles is currently under consideration in Parliament. This means that by the end of 2024, a regulatory framework should be created for it.
“Probably by 2026, people will start to see cars that have self-driving capabilities. It will be gradual… so there will be companies that will deploy it for use in certain places,” said Mark Harper.
Critics of this technology fear that cars can cause accidents.
However, Harper noted that everything he has seen about automated vehicles and self-driving technologies is very focused on keeping people safe.
The UK plans to make manufacturers, not owners of self-driving cars, legally responsible for any accidents.
