Ukraine changes rules for limiting electricity consumption
Starting June 24, Ukraine will start deducting the amount of electricity needed to power critical infrastructure when determining consumption restrictions for citizens.
Main theses:
- A new mechanism for limiting electricity consumption in Ukraine has been created to ensure an even distribution of electricity among all regions of the country.
- The removal of one more NPP unit from repair allowed us to increase the power system capacity by 1,000 MW and avoid power outages last weekend.
- Imported electricity helps Ukraine to meet its needs in case of a shortage of its own capacity.
- The mechanism for setting electricity limits by region will be updated to ensure even distribution of electricity and reduce blackouts across Ukraine.
- As of this morning, power supply to most consumers in Sumy has been restored after the accident, but emergency works are underway to fully restore power in the city.
How the mechanism of restrictions on electricity consumption will change
According to Yuriy Boyko, the Prime Minister’s advisor on energy, the new mechanism is designed to establish uniform electricity consumption across all regions.
Boyko noted that in the coming days, another NPP unit was taken out of service, which increased the power system capacity by another 1,000 MW and avoided power outages over the weekend.
At the same time, on June 9, according to the Prime Minister’s advisor, Ukraine still had to attract assistance in the form of imported electricity.
In particular, he said that starting June 24, Ukraine will set new light limits for the regions.
We will subtract the amount of electricity needed by critical infrastructure from the available electricity in Ukraine, and with this bracketed amount, we will set a limit for each region. Relatively speaking, it will no longer be 80% for each area, but, taking into account criticism that will reduce accessibility, it will be, for example, 70%. But this 70% will be brought to each region. The respective duration of outages in Ukraine should be equalized,” emphasized Boyko.
What we know about the accident and large-scale power outage in Sumy
Representatives of NPC Ukrenergo reported that as of the morning, power supply to most consumers in Sumy had been restored as a result of a large-scale accident.
It is noted that power engineers are still carrying out emergency work. The power will be restored to all residents of the city who were without electricity “in the coming hours”.
At night, a power infrastructure facility in Sumy region was shut down for technical reasons. Consumers in Sumy lost power,” Ukrenergo said in a statement.
