What awaits the Ukrainian energy sector in winter: Ukrenergo CEO talks about possible scenarios

Ukraine expects to have enough electricity for the winter, but the situation may change in case of massive shelling by Russia. The energy sector is preparing for all possible scenarios, including the worst-case scenario.

This was announced by Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, CEO of Ukrenergo, during a telethon.

According to him, it is very difficult to predict the consequences of massive shelling.

“If we talk about the scenario without shelling, we understand how to cover this consumption in winter. But the shelling can change the situation dramatically. Therefore, we must be prepared for the worst-case scenario. What is the worst-case scenario? It is a repetition of massive attacks with missiles and drones against the power system,” he said.

Kudrytskyi said that Ukraine is preparing backup power supply schemes for consumers, a stock of materials and equipment to quickly repair damaged networks and stations.

“We are not only Ukrenergo, but also the energy sector as a whole. That is, we are preparing to counter these attacks and restore the system as best we can,” said the CEO of Ukrenergo.

Kudrytskyi noted that our air defense forces are also preparing, and consumers can also join this counteraction to the aggressor.

Advice to consumers for the autumn-winter period from the CEO of Ukrenergo

“Firstly, economical and rational consumption of electricity. Starting in November, there will be a cold snap and an increase in consumption. It can be mitigated a little bit for the power system by consuming electricity more economically,” Kudrytskyi said.

According to him, the second thing is, of course, to prepare for winter in terms of everyday life.

“A lot of the advice we gave to consumers last year may still be relevant this year. If you have a diesel generator or an electricity storage device, you need to check it and put it in order. If possible, insulate your home, if you have the financial means,” said the CEO of Ukrenergo.

In addition, he advised to check where the nearest “point of invincibility” is, noting that simple everyday things will make you feel more confident.

“It is not a given that the shelling will be as massive as last year. But we need to be prepared for the worst,” added Kudrytskyi.

As a reminder, Russia actively launched massive attacks on the Ukrainian energy sector last year. Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced the formation of a multi-level protection for energy facilities.

“The winter will be difficult, but we have to survive,” he said.
