Abrams tanks for the Armed Forces of Ukraine will be produced by General Dynamics in three months
The US government has promised to transfer Abrams tanks to the Armed Forces. The volume of the first batch will be 31 units. According to the FT, tanks for the Ukrainian army will be assembled at General Dynamics’ production facilities in Ohio. This plant can produce 12 tanks per month.
FT journalists note that the Abrams tank cannot be called an ideal solution for foreign armies. The fact is that during operation it requires intensive maintenance, which requires a huge number of spare parts. In addition, jet fuel is used to refuel the Abrams tank. It is more difficult to get it than ordinary diesel fuel.
At the end of January, Dmytro Kuleba, who holds the position of the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, announced that the Ukrainian army will receive 140 tanks from the allies as a result of the ‘first wave’ of supplies. The White House did not consider it necessary to hide the fact that the Abrams tanks will not be delivered to the Armed Forces immediately, as they need to be manufactured. The Pentagon cannot transfer tanks from its stocks, because they use ‘secret’ armor with depleted uranium. The US cannot afford for this technology to end up in the hands of Russia. Kevlar plates are used to book the export version of the Abrams.
