Ukraine will present an art object made of anti-tank hedgehogs at Burning Man 2023 (photo)
Ukraine will be represented at Burning Man 2023 by The Hedgehog Temple, a war memorial in the form of a hedgehog built from anti-tank hedgehogs.
This was reported by Yaroslav Korets, the leader of the Ukrainian Burner community.
“The theme of BM 2023 is ANIMALIA. When I heard about the theme, it was autumn and we were sitting without electricity in Odesa, like all Ukrainians. The idea for the art project came to me in a few minutes. Our project is a war memorial called The Hedgehog Temple, a giant hedgehog built from anti-tank hedgehogs,” Yaroslav writes.
The image of the anti-tank hedgehog was “on the surface,” as it became one of the symbols of defense.
“How to combine the non-military paradigm of Burning Man participants with our ‘everyday life’ and remind us once again that every day in Ukraine people die from guns and missiles, very often people who had nothing to do with weapons before February 24, sitting in their offices, workshops, making design or filming movies, living their beautiful lives,” Korets notes.
Inside the seven-meter-long “hedgehog” will be stories of soldiers and ordinary people who died in the war. The structure itself will be made of rusty metal, its frame covered with a military pixel grid.
Its construction has now been completed and shipped in a container to the United States. Yaroslav also notes that anyone can post their story on the artwork. To do this, you will need to contact him through personal messages and send a photo and a brief history of the deceased person.
On the last day of Burning Man, these stories will be moved to the Temple of the Heart where they will be burned according to the festival’s tradition.
