Ukrainian Armed Forces show how American FIM-92 Stinger system shoots down Russian X-101 strategic missile (video)
This week, the Ukrainian Defense Forces destroyed a Russian X-101 cruise missile. It was shot down with an American FIM-92 Stinger system in the Kyiv region.
The video of the destruction of the Russian missile was published by the Commander of the Joint Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Lieutenant General Serhiy Nayev. It is reported that the air threat was eliminated by the forces of a mobile air defense fire group on August 30, 2023.
FIM-92 Stinger is an American man-portable air defense system. It has an infrared homing head and is designed to intercept primarily airplanes, helicopters, and drones flying at low altitudes.
The X-101 is a strategic air-to-ground cruise missile. It has a maximum launch range of 5500 km. The carriers are Tu-160 and Tu-95MS strategic bombers, which are launched from the Caspian Sea region.
The X-101 is equipped with a conventional head unit. The version with a special charge is called X-102. The thermonuclear charge has a yield of 250 kilotons or 1 megaton. In flight, the missile can reach speeds of up to 270 km/h.
