Bone marrow from a U.S. donor: a one-year-old boy undergoes transplant in Ukraine (photo)

Hematologists of the National Children’s Hospital “Okhmatdyt” successfully performed a bone marrow transplant for one-year-old Dmytro.

The boy is struggling with Hurler syndrome, a severe metabolic disease. Dmytro’s life-saving hematopoietic cells were found in a 26-year-old donor from the United States.

It is noted that the cells were delivered in 42 hours. Despite the international maximum standard of 72 hours and the extremely difficult logistics of getting to Ukraine in the midst of war.

The Ministry of Health thanked the doctors and the Tabletochki Charitable Foundation who contributed to this life-saving transplant.
