New York City police put the K5 robot on duty to patrol the subway
The New York Police Department is introducing the K5 robot to patrol the Times Square subway station, Engadget reports.
The K5 robot, developed by Knightscope from California, weighs approximately 190 kg and is equipped with four cameras that can record video without sound.
For the next two months, New York will rent K5 for $9 per hour. He will patrol the station from midnight to 6 a.m. as part of his probationary period.
But for the first two weeks, K5 will not work fully, as it will study the map of the station.
During the presentation of the robot, New York City Mayor Eric Adams said that K5 will record video that can be viewed in case of emergency or crime.
The K5 robot cannot respond to real emergencies at the station and does not have the ability to physically or verbally detain suspects.
The only real-time assistance it can provide to people is to connect them with subway workers to report an incident or ask a question, provided the person who needs help can press the right button on the K5.
