A couple from Sweden are raising money to buy back the rights to the legendary Christmas track Last Christmas and get it banned
A couple from Sweden, Thomas and Hanna Mazzetti, hate Wham!’s ‘Last Christmas’ so much that they raised over $60,000 online to buy the rights to it and never hear it again. The Daily Mail writes about it.
The couple will need another 15 to 25 million dollars. Currently, the rights to ‘Last Christmas’ belong to Warner Chappell Music UK.
If they succeed, they intend to bury the master recording in a Finnish nuclear waste site, ‘where it will lie for at least two million years.’ So far, 327 people have joined the couple’s initiative.
According to Hannah, her hatred of the song began 13 years ago when she worked in a cafe in Oxford, where the song was played on repeat.
‘Especially for the Christmas season, my boss recorded a CD with a holiday playlist. He rarely came to the cafe, so he did not understand the agony of his staff, who died hearing Last Christmas 111 times a day,’ said Hannah.
Last year, she talked to friends about how much she still disliked the song and how much she would pay to never hear it again. This inspired her to conduct an online fundraiser.
‘I’m sorry, but it has to be like that,’ adds the woman. – We don’t hate Wham!, but we hate this song. It’s because it gets 5,000 spins a day, but we feel we need to do something to support people who are suffering the same way we are.’
The couple adds that the people who like to listen to this song are their enemies. And in general – there are other songs that should be removed from the air, for example, ‘All I Want For Christmas’ by Mariah Carey.
