A new military electric vehicle based on the GMC Hummer EV will soon be added to the General Motors GM Defense product line.
A new concept (eMCV), or Electric Military Concept Vehicle, was presented during the Marine Military Expo in Washington, DC. The Hummer EV is the first next-generation electric vehicle to use GM’s new Ultium electric platform, according to Breaking Defense.
Those familiar with the brand’s history will be somewhat surprised, as the original gasoline-powered Hummer was mainly a civilian version of the military Humvee. And now, the product line is on the contrary, with a militarized version of the civilian Hummer.
The eMCV has the same chassis and transmission as the Hummer EV, which is powered by a powerful 200 kWh battery.
With different aerodynamics and weight, the vehicle will have a slightly shorter range than the 530 km of the current Hummer EV – a GM Defense representative said at the exhibition that the newcomer will have a range of about 480 km. If necessary, they will equip the car with a diesel engine, which will extend the range of the vehicle on a single refueling.
As a reminder, GM Defense already had an EV program for the US Army, but it had a 66 kWh battery of the previous generation, which is too small.
