Barbie movie grosses over $1 billion at the global box office
The movie Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig, has already grossed more than $1 billion at the global box office.
This was reported by the film’s creators, Variety reports.
Box office receipts in North America brought in $459 million. The amount of international fees is $572 million.
In its third weekend of release, Barbie grossed $53 million, down 43% from the second week. The Warner Bros. film has been leading the US box office for three weeks in a row.
Only three other films grossed more than a billion: the animated film Frozen ($1.3 billion) and Frozen 2 ($1.45 billion), as well as Captain Marvel ($1.1 billion), directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck.
As a reminder, in 2015, Mattel, the owner of the rights to the Barbie doll, engaged Sony to produce a feature film. In different years, Amy Schummer and Anne Hathaway were contenders for the lead role. The term of the contract for cooperation expired, and Warner Bros. offered to make a movie about Barbie. Greta Gerwig was immediately appointed director.
After the announcement of the film, a new trend called Barbiecore, which is wearing a pink total look, exploded in the fashion industry.
