Bill Gates promised to give almost all of his fortune to charity
The founder of Microsoft said that he plans to donate almost all of his fortune to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which he founded together with his ex-wife.
$20 billion Gates is going to transfer to a charity fund this month. Annual expenses of the fund are planned to increase from the current $6 billion to $9 billion by 2026.
The billionaire and philanthropist explained his gesture by the difficult events that people have experienced in recent years. Among them are the pandemic, the war in Ukraine, which has become a ‘huge tragedy’ for the whole world, as well as climate change, which is developing according to a more pessimistic scenario than scientists predicted.
‘In the future, I plan to transfer almost all of my wealth to the foundation. ‘I will go down on the list of the richest people in the world and ultimately leave it,’ – Gates continued.
‘I am obliged to return my funds to society in the ways that will most effectively reduce suffering and make life better. And I hope that other persons with great wealth and influence will not be left out at this moment either,’ he concluded.
Currently, Bill Gates ranks 4th on Bloomberg’s list of billionaires, after Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and French businessman Bernard Arnault. His fortune is estimated at $114 billion.
