Disney engineer shows a unique HoloTile mat that allows you to move while standing still
Disney showed a HoloTile mat that will allow you to move in any direction while standing still. This will increase the immersiveness of virtual reality. A similar technology was shown, in particular, in the movie “Player One, Get Ready.”
The author of the mat is Lenny Smoot, an engineer and inventor at Disney’s research and development division.
The HoloTile surface does not allow a person to leave its boundaries and crash into a wall or any other object. Several people can be on it at the same time and move independently of each other, Smoot says.
Disney first filed a patent for this technology in 2017.
The HoloTile surface is made up of tiles, each of which can rotate and guide a person or object standing on the surface.
No information on the sale of the surface and mass production was announced.
