Finland to ban entry of cars with Russian registration – media

Following the Baltic states, Finland also plans to ban the entry of cars with Russian registration. This was reported by Yle.

It is noted that Finland wants to follow the EU’s tougher line. An official statement will be made on September 15 by Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen.

This decision is based on the European Commission’s policy, the recommendations for the implementation of which were released a week ago. By banning the entry of cars registered in Russia, the European Commission aims to prevent sanctions evasion.

At a briefing on September 13, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsakhkna explained that the restrictions have a greater effect when they are applied together, and this increases the price Russia pays for the war.

According to Yle, cars with fewer than ten people in them, registered in Russia, will no longer be able to cross the border. There are some exceptions to this rule. It is not reported when the ban will come into force.

“Finland has tightened its visa policy due to Russia’s aggressive war in Ukraine. Traffic on the eastern border has decreased, but it still remains relatively busy,” the media report said.

As a reminder, on September 13, Foreign Minister Margus Tsakhkna said that Estonia had banned the entry of cars with Russian registration. Latvia and Lithuania have also banned cars with Russian license plates from entering their territories. This means that Russians cannot visit the Baltic States in their vehicles. If the Russian citizen does try to cross the Lithuanian border, customs will confiscate the car.
