Hyundai unveiled an electric car that can drive sideways (video)
Hyundai Mobis presented the Mobion car at CES, which is essentially a modified Ioniq 5.
It is equipped with a new generation e-Corner system that allows all four wheels to rotate independently to an angle of more than 90 degrees. This allows not only to repeat the famous Crabwalk function in the GMC Hummer EV and other cars, when the car moves diagonally, but also to move simply to the side. This feature allows you to perform non-standard tasks on the road and in parking, such as turning around a fixed front or rear axle, etc.
Each wheel is essentially its own closed transmission. Hyundai Mobis calls this technology In-Wheel, which combines an electric motor, braking, steering and suspension functions on each wheel.
The first version of the e-Corner system was presented at this exhibition a year ago, but Hyundai Mobis continues to develop and improve it. Mobion differs from the regular Ioniq 5 with new exterior lighting that can warn other drivers of emergency situations. The system can project an image on the ground in a 360-degree range, warning others of the intended direction of the car’s movement.
So far, Hyundai hasn’t said anything about starting mass production of the new electric vehicle.
