Iran has accumulated enriched uranium for several nuclear bombs – internal IAEA reports

Iran has amassed enriched uranium stockpiles sufficient to build several nuclear bombs and refuses to comply with UN demands. This is stated in the IAEA’s internal reports, which were obtained by Reuters.

Iran already has 128.3 kg of uranium enriched to 60%, and if further enriched to 90%, this will be enough to produce three nuclear bombs, the agency quotes confidential IAEA reports.

According to the IAEA, Iran enriches an average of about 3 kg of uranium per month to 60%, and in some months up to 9 kg.

A senior US diplomat told the agency that Iran is “the only country in the world that enriches uranium to such a high level without producing nuclear weapons.”

In 2022, the IAEA Board will demand that Iran allow an international investigation into the detection of traces of uranium at Iranian facilities that it has not declared as nuclear. There has been no progress in the investigation, and the agreement to reinstall the monitoring equipment that Iran dismantled last year has been only partially implemented.

Also in September, Tehran revoked the accreditation of some of the IAEA’s leading inspectors.

The agency’s reports state that Iran is not fulfilling its obligations.

At the same time, it is highly unlikely that new sanctions will be imposed on Iran because of this, as the United States and Europe will avoid new complications in the region due to Israel’s war with the Hamas terrorist movement, sources in diplomatic circles told Reuters.

In January 2023, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said that Iran could withdraw its signature to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in response to the European Parliament’s initiative to add the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to the list of terrorist organizations.

  • On May 5, 2023, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant said that, according to Israel, Iran had accumulated enough material to build five nuclear bombs.
  • On June 1, he commented on the level of the nuclear threat from Iran by stating that the Israeli military would fulfill its duty to defend the country if the situation forced it to do so.
  • In October, the Pentagon’s annual report stated that Iran has enough resources to build a nuclear device in less than two weeks.
