Kyivstar mobile operator has filed a lawsuit over a hacker attack

Kyivstar, Ukraine’s largest telecom operator, has filed a lawsuit against the hacker attack for interference with its network, the company’s president, Oleksandr Komarov, said on the air of a national telethon on Thursday.

At the same time, he noted that he had no information that any lawsuits had been filed against the company in connection with the mobile communication failure.

“There are no such lawsuits (from customers – IF-U). There is a claim from Kyivstar about interference with its network. There are eight criminal cases opened by the Security Service of Ukraine, but so far I have not seen any lawsuits from customers,” Komarov said.

He clarified that the company has not yet calculated the losses incurred due to the failure, but according to preliminary estimates, they amount to billions of hryvnias.

“We have not counted them (losses – IF-U) and are not even able to calculate them yet, as we are restoring internal systems. But the scale is billions of hryvnias,” said the president of Kyivstar.

At the same time, he assured that the company has no plans to raise tariffs to compensate for losses.

Komarov also commented on the need to replace damaged equipment in a number of homes connected to the Domashniy Internet service.

“This is not a typical situation. Out of 80 thousand houses serviced by Kyivstar, there were about 2 thousand of them, and today there are about 600-700 of them left. By the end of this week, all this (equipment – IF-U) will be repaired in the houses,” Komarov said.

Earlier, Kyivstar said that as compensation, subscribers will be able to use the services they subscribe to for free for a month. In addition, the mobile operator will allocate UAH 100 million to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

It was clarified that subscribers of Home Internet and Vse Razom tariffs will not be charged for the service package from January 1 to January 31, and contract subscribers of Home Internet will not be charged from December 22 to January 21.

For corporate clients, this will be in the form of a 100% discount on the tariff for mobile, fixed-line Internet, data and telephony services from January 1 to January 31.

As reported, after a disruption in the morning of December 12 caused by a large-scale cyberattack, Kyivstar began restoring voice services in the evening of December 13. A day later, the company’s mobile Internet service was restored in some regions, and the company announced its full restoration in the country in the evening of December 15.

The company announced the restoration of basic services, including SMS and mobile Internet in roaming, on December 20.
