Latvia to hand over confiscated cars with Russian license plates to Ukraine

Latvia will begin the process of confiscating cars with Russian registration and transferring them to Ukraine. These legislative changes were approved in the first reading by the Latvian Saeima.

This is stated in the report of the Latvian parliament.

“Amendments to the Traffic Law provide for the confiscation of vehicles registered in Russia if they are not registered in Latvia within the time limit established by law,” the statement said.

The amendments will come into force three months after their adoption. In addition, car owners will be fined from 750 to 2000 euros when their cars are seized.

The amendments are expected to be finalized and come into force in mid-November. That is, confiscation of Russian cars in Latvia may begin in mid-February.

Cars with Russian registration will be able to participate in road traffic in Latvia only on a transit basis for 24 hours. When entering the country, the owner of a car with Russian registration is obliged to provide information about the vehicle and its driver in a special electronic system.
