Montana is the first US state to completely ban TikTok

The Montana authorities have banned TikTok in the United States. The decision was made to protect residents from the collection of confidential information by Chinese intelligence agencies.

Montana, with a population of over 1 million people, became the first US state to completely ban the service. The authorities say they may fine ByteDance, which owns TikTok, for violating the ban. The amount of the fine will be $10,000 for each violation.

Google and Apple may also be fined. To avoid sanctions, they must stop displaying TikTok in their app stores in the state. There are no penalties for users yet. The new law comes into force on January 1, 2024. However, it is worth noting the high probability that it will be challenged.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) called the law “unconstitutional”. ACLU representatives believe that the governor of Montana infringes on the rights of state residents who express themselves, do business, and seek information using TikTok.

In conclusion, the Chinese service is very popular in the United States. Almost half of the country’s population uses TikTok. The Chinese company claims that the vast majority of users are over 18 years old. At the same time, the Pew Research Center claims that 67% of American teenagers aged 13-17 use TikTok.
