Nanotechnology breakthrough could help treat blindness

A group of scientists from England has conducted a study that has helped them learn how to treat age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which leads to gradual visual impairment. This is reported by SciTechDaily.

They have developed a new method of growing eye cells. For this purpose, nanotechnology was used to create a three-dimensional structure on which cells will grow.

The researchers also treated this 3D structure with a steroid that improved cell development. A steroid designed to fight inflammation gave the cells the desired characteristics and helped them grow better.

The new method can replace a part of the eye called Bruch’s membrane. Problems with this membrane are known to cause diseases such as AMD.
