In the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv, in the Koncha Zaspa forest park, cases of African swine fever were detected. This led to the introduction of quarantine in the surrounding area starting on September 27.
This was reported by the Kyiv City State Administration with reference to the Main Directorate of the State Food and Consumer Service in Kyiv.
Prior to that, the corpse of a pig suffering from African swine fever was found on the territory of the Koncha Zaspa forest park.
The State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection has identified two quarantine zones. The first is a protection zone within a radius of 3 kilometers, and the second is a surveillance zone within a radius of 10 kilometers.
In the protection zone, it is forbidden to sell live pigs and pork products in the markets, except for those obtained from slaughterhouses and processing plants that have an operating permit and accompanying veterinary documents. The same rule applies to the supervision area. In addition, exhibitions, fairs and markets with animals are not allowed in the protection zone (except for the transportation of pigs to designated slaughterhouses and meat processing plants).
In the private sector, which has entered the quarantine zones, they can go around the yards to identify sick pigs in time.
What is African swine fever?
This is an acutely infectious, viral disease of pigs that manifests itself in fever, hemorrhages, bluish skin of the animal and is characterized by high mortality.
African swine fever does not pose a danger to humans – it affects only wild and domestic pigs. The main way of transmission is direct contact between animals.
The pathogen can remain viable outside the body for a long time, primarily in food products infected with the African swine fever virus (for example, in smoked ham for up to 5 months). Cold only “preserves” the pathogen.
