Russia starts jamming GPS signal in Poland

In early March 2024, GPS signal interference was recorded over Poland, the Baltic Sea, and partially over Germany and Sweden. GPSJAM, a service that monitors such events, recorded large-scale disruptions.

One of the likely reasons is Russia’s use of the Borisoglebsk-2 electronic warfare system, which has already been spotted in the Kaliningrad region. It is possible that the obstacles are related to the NATO exercises that took place in Poland.

Blocking the GPS signal can have different consequences. For example, Google Maps can incorrectly determine the user’s location, showing them the wrong location. Such failures can affect the operation of other applications that use GPS.

ISW analysts do not rule out that GPS jamming is part of Russia’s “hybrid war” against Europe. In their view, this could be an attempt to disrupt NATO exercises.

In addition to Russian EW, there are other possible causes, such as technical malfunctions on the part of GPS satellites and/or ground infrastructure.

The situation with the GPS signal in the region remains tense. Users are advised to follow the news and use alternative methods of location.
