The German Aerospace Center tested unique robots for lunar exploration. The tests were conducted in Italy on Mount Etna.
To be more precise, the Germans tested four robots at once: the Scout all-terrain vehicle, the Interact lunar rover and two light rovers (LRU 1 and LRU2). The Etna volcano was chosen as the site of the tests by approximating lunar conditions.
During the operational tests of LRU 1 and LRU 2, soil samples were evaluated and their composition scanned. At the same time, LRU 2 managed to distribute Wi-Fi. The rover is equipped with a device for laser spectroscopy. With its help, it is possible to find various elements in the plasma, which is formed when a laser is exposed to a soil sample.
The Interact rover on the Moon will be responsible for collecting the material. For this purpose, it was equipped with a camera and a robotic manipulator with tactile feedback. It is assumed that the capture will allow scientists to feel the rock samples of the Earth’s natural satellite. A reconnaissance drone will also go to the moon. He will survey the area and compile a map for the two rovers.
