The US Army is purchasing HIMARS missiles for $520 million
After supplying Ukraine with high-precision GMLRS missiles, the States decided to replenish their stockpiles in order to maintain the ability to assist allies and international partners.
The US Department of Defense has signed a contract with Lockheed Martin for the production of high-precision missiles for MLRS. This is reported by CNBC.
American defense giant Lockheed Martin will make the missiles to replenish the US Army’s stockpile, which has dwindled following the supply of GMLRS missiles to Ukraine.
“This contract allows us to replenish our own stockpiles while providing critical capabilities to our allies and international partners,” said Douglas Bush, Assistant Secretary for Acquisition, Logistics and Technology.
GMLRS stands for Guided Multiple Launch Rocket Systems, the high-precision guided missiles used in the HIMARS and M270 MLRS. Their firing range exceeds 84 km. The caliber is 227 mm. One HIMARS contains 6 such missiles, which can be fired in less than a minute.
It will be recalled that the USA conducted tests of a longer-range version of the ER GMLRS missile, which is capable of firing at a distance of up to 150 km.
It was also reported that the US will conduct tests of a new missile for HIMARS with a firing range of up to 1,000 km.
