The US supports the transfer of German Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine
The German news agency FAZ, citing its own sources, reports that the United States supports the provision of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.
According to the publication, the United States authorities several times tried to influence German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and persuade him to supply combat vehicles to Ukraine. All this time, the German government justified its position by the fact that the USA does not send Abrams tanks to Ukraine, so Germany should not be given the Leopard 2.
At the same time, it is emphasized that Washington does not demand that Berlin send tanks to Ukraine, but only ‘supports the appropriate decision’, which Germany must reach independently. A corresponding statement was made by the adviser to the US president, Jake Sullivan, back in mid-autumn in a conversation with his German colleague, Jens Plötner. Olaf Scholz’s administration does not comment on this information. The chancellor’s office only stated that Berlin is in close contact with its allies (especially the USA) in matters of providing military assistance to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
It should be noted that since February 24, 2022, Germany handed over to Ukraine five MARS II multiple rocket launcher systems, the newest IRIS-T air defense system, three dozen Gepard anti-aircraft tanks, 14 Panzerhaubitze 2000 self-propelled artillery units, and COBRA radars.
