The world’s longest energy bridge has been launched between the UK and Denmark

The United Kingdom and Denmark have opened the world’s longest energy bridge, which will allow the exchange of renewable energy between the two countries, Electrek reports.

The Viking Link power bridge is 765 km long and has a capacity of 1.4 GW. It connects Danish wind farms to the UK power grid, where demand for green energy is growing.

The power bridge consists of a high-voltage cable that transmits direct current with a voltage of 525 kV. The cable was manufactured by the Italian company Prysmian Group, which used different types of cable for land and sea.

The Viking Link power bridge is the result of a joint project between the UK National Grid and the Danish national transmission system operator Energinet.

The project cost was $2.16 billion. The power bridge will increase the reliability of electricity supply in both countries and contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions.

The UK and Denmark are not resting on their laurels and are planning new energy bridge projects. One of them, LionLink, is to connect the UK and the Netherlands with a capacity of 1.8 GW. The other – more ambitious – is to stretch from Morocco to the southern coast of the UK with a length of 3800 km.

These projects aim to make the UK a leader in the use of renewable energy in Europe.
