Ukrainian cyber troops successfully attack a leading Russian hosting provider
Hackers from the Ukrainian Hacker Group have attacked the Russian hosting provider and domain registrar reg.ru, which holds a third of the Russian hosting market. Now, Ukrainian cyberactivists are holding the data of some of the clients, whose data was confirmed by almost 4 million Russian media outlets.
Ukrainian hackers also published a sample of five hundred databases on their Telegram channel, noting: “And we certainly don’t say goodbye, but reg.ru can still change all passwords in an hour or two, tell users that their data is in Ukraine and notify the regulator and counterintelligence.”
“The attack took place on March 18. The hackers exploited a software vulnerability on the website of one of the hosting provider’s clients and managed to connect to the database server,” Vedomosti reported, citing the reg.ru press service. Of course, the company assures that there was no significant damage to the bases and there is no threat to corporate clients.
As a reminder, reg.ru is an ICANN-accredited domain registrar and hosting provider. The company is registered in Moscow and serves more than 3300000 domains and offers registration in 750 international domain zones, as well as provides hosting, SSL, mail, VPS, and physical server rental services. It has 3.7 million customers.
