The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has approved a strategy to help reduce the gender pay gap. The government’s plan is already being implemented, the press service of the Ministry of Economy reports .
Thus, by 2030, officials plan to reduce the gender pay gap from 18.6% to 13.6%.
“Like most developed countries, Ukraine has committed itself to closing the gender pay gap over the next seven years. Ukraine has made a fundamental decision to develop despite the war. And the state does not turn off this path, despite the fact that it is sometimes mined, sometimes we have to overcome it under fire,” said First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska, who also took part in the thematic press conference with Yulia Svyrydenko.
The government program is expected to achieve three key goals:
- improve legislation on equal pay;
- to help overcome stereotypes and discrimination against professions based on gender;
- create favorable conditions for a convenient combination of family and professional responsibilities.
“After the victory, Ukraine must become a country without barriers and without prejudice. We have to build it exactly like that: innovative, focused on people and their needs, open to diversity. Equality of opportunities is a guarantee of harmonious development of the state and society,” said Minister of Economy Yulia Svyrydenko.
Earlier, Human Rights Ombudsman Pavlo Lubinets explained why there is a gender pay gap in Ukraine. According to him, men earn more than women because of discrimination.
“Improving labor legislation, overcoming employers’ stereotypes, and increasing women’s motivation are the main principles for making the trend of reducing the gender pay gap in Ukraine sustainable and irreversible,” he emphasized.
