Warner Bros. plans to create a new Harry Potter series
A season for each of Rowling's 7 books
Warner Bros. is close to signing a deal to create a new series based on the Harry Potter franchise. This is reported by two informed sources.
Each season of the series will be based on one of the seven books by J.K. Rowling. The company hopes that the series will become the cornerstone of a new streaming strategy to be announced next week. Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav and HBO chairman Casey Bloys have been working to convince Rowling to make a new series, but the deal is not yet finalized.
Previously, Warner Bros. turned each of the seven books into a hit movie, and the story culminated in a two-part film based on the last installment. The series is expected to allow screenwriters to dive deeper into the world of Rowling’s books, many of which exceed 500 pages.
According to sources, the author of the books will be involved in the creation of the series to ensure that it stays true to her original material and intent. But Rowling will not be involved in the day-to-day tasks or act as the main creator.
As for Warner Bros.’ new streaming strategy, the key will be to have new content, especially movies and series based on stories and characters that viewers already know. Warner Bros. has a rich library that includes Rowling’s Wizarding World, The Lord of the Rings, and the superhero league that includes Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. Zaslav believes that it is better to invest in fewer movies and TV series, but they should be of a higher level.
