When should we expect Kyivstar to restore communication in Ukraine: the company gave an answer

Kyivstar is currently being cautious about the timeframe for restoring communication after the outage on December 12. Several scenarios are considered.

This was announced by the company’s president Alexander Komarov in an interview with Forbes.

“This is the most difficult question today, because I don’t want to speculate on it. We have several scenarios. The basic and optimistic one is that we will start restoring customer services. We have already partially restored fixed-line internet for our home internet base. Step by step, we will soon restore services for the entire fixed-line customer base,” he assured.

Komarov noted that mobile services are a bit more difficult.

“As a baseline scenario, I hope that we will start restoring this service tomorrow [ed. December 13]. But there is a very high level of uncertainty. You restore a system and new problems start popping up. Then you need to check the entire system to make sure that there is no malware or conditional backdoors left by this attack, which leaves the perimeter unprotected,” the company’s president explained.

He emphasized that recovery is a complex iterative process.

“On the one hand, we are recovering, but on the other hand, we are limited by resources, because any connections to the network are not made automatically, but manually through the appropriate check. Therefore, I really hope that tomorrow [ed. December 13] we will start restoring the service, but I cannot guarantee it,” Komarov summarized.

Kyivstar fails to work properly

A large-scale failure in the network of Kyivstar mobile operator occurred on December 12. Subscribers complain about the lack of communication, the company’s website is down. Problems are being reported on a massive scale throughout Ukraine.

At the same time, Kyivstar users cannot connect to national roaming. This is due to the fact that the operator cannot send information about its subscribers due to a large-scale failure.

Later, it turned out that Kyivstar had been hit by a massive hacker attack. It caused problems in the operation of terminals and ATMs of PrivatBank and Oschadbank.
