The number of prostate cancer patients will increase
As of today, prostate cancer is already the leading cause of death and disability. It is also the most common form of cancer in men in more than 100 countries.
Given the aging population and rising life expectancy worldwide, the new analysis predicts a sharp increase in disease and death over the next 15 years.
The number of diagnoses is projected to increase from 1.4 million per year in 2020 to 2.9 million in 2040. This will mean that every hour, approximately 330 men worldwide will be informed that they have the disease.
It is estimated that the number of deaths worldwide will increase by 85% over a 20-year period, from 375,000 in 2020 to nearly 700,000 in 2040. The true number of deaths is likely to be higher, experts say, due to underdiagnosis and lack of data in underdeveloped and middle-income countries.
The findings of the study were published in the Lancet as part of the work of the Prostate Cancer Commission and were presented at the annual congress of the European Association of Urology in Paris on Saturday, April 5.
