A new supercomputer was presented in Spain, which is among the ten most powerful in the world

On December 21, a new European supercomputer MareNostrum 5 was unveiled in Barcelona, which will perform 314 trillion operations per second and will be among the ten most powerful supercomputers in the world.

This was reported by the European Commission;

“MareNostrum 5, Europe’s newest world-class supercomputer, was unveiled in Barcelona, Spain. It is currently ranked among the ten most powerful supercomputers in the world. It will be located in the Barcelona Supercomputing Center and will be used for a wide range of scientific and industrial customers from March 2024,” the statement said.

MareNostrum 5 is also the greenest supercomputer among the world’s supercomputers, as it has high energy efficiency and is powered by renewable energy. At the same time, the heat generated by this supercomputer will be used to heat the room in which it is located.

The computer system is expected to be used in medical research, in the production of medicines and vaccines, in the simulation of certain phenomena, such as the speed of virus spread, as well as in other areas, including climate research, engineering, materials science, and Earth research.

MareNostrum 5 will also develop artificial intelligence platforms, promote the EU’s technological development and its leading role in global efforts to create safe, responsible and “ethical” artificial intelligence.

The system was created thanks to an investment of 151 million euros shared by the EU and an international consortium led by Spain, which also includes Portugal and Turkey.

The EU budget for 2021-2027 provides €7 billion in funding for European supercomputer projects.
