Secret base of Palestinian militants found under UN headquarters in Gaza (photo)
The Israeli Defense Forces announced that it had discovered a tunnel of Palestinian militants Hamas under the headquarters of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). The Commissioner General of the Agency, Filippo Lazzarini, said that the organization was unaware of this, as the staff left the headquarters on October 12, 2023, immediately after the war began.
The IDF first discovered the tunnel near the UN agency’s school, according to a statement on Telegram. Allegedly, it was used by Hamas military intelligence and took place under the UN headquarters in the Gaza Strip.
The tunnel was 700 meters long, 18 meters deep, and equipped with explosion-proof doors. Inside, they found an electrical infrastructure that was connected to the UN headquarters. According to the IDF, this indicates that the UN agency provided the tunnel with electricity.
After that, Israeli security forces raided the headquarters itself. A large number of weapons were found in it, including rifles, ammunition, grenades and explosives.
Lazzarini has already written on social network X that he cannot confirm the Israeli army’s information because the Agency does not have access to this headquarters. The Commissioner General noted that the last inspection of the organizations’ premises was conducted in September 2013. In his opinion, the IDF’s information deserves “an independent investigation,” but it is unrealistic to organize it because of the fighting.

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz on social network X demanded Filippo Lazzarini’s resignation as soon as possible. In his opinion, the Commissioner General’s statement “is not only absurd, it is an insult to common sense.”
Israel has already accused UN staff of supporting Hamas
Israel has previously accused several UN agency staff members of involvement in the October 7 attack on Israel by the Palestinian movement Hamas. The six-page document claimed that about 190 employees of the agency, including teachers, were also militants of Hamas or Islamic Jihad. The dossier contained the names and photos of these individuals.
In this regard, a number of countries have suspended funding for the organization. UNRWA has warned of the risk of suspension of humanitarian aid in the region, particularly in the Gaza Strip.
