The first smart shelter for students appeared in Ukraine (photo)

In the library of the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute named after Igor Sikorsky. On January 25, a smart shelter was opened at Igor Sikorsky. The Ukrainian venture capital firm CLUST, which took part in its creation, calls it Ukraine’s first smart shelter for students.

The team plans to scale the Smart Shelter project across Ukraine and create such spaces in 10-20 universities.

The shelter is located on the lower floor of the library building and has a play area, private offices, small individual spaces for video calls, and its own library with meeting spaces. In a separate part there are restrooms, showers and a room with beds. The Smart Shelter occupies the area of the former book depository, with an entrance through the library’s atrium.

The premises will be a coworking space that will operate under any conditions and will be transformed into a shelter during an air raid.

  • The project was presented at the XI All-Ukrainian Festival of Innovative Projects Sikorsky Challenge 2022, and work began in 2023.
  • The project was designed by architect Pavlo Pecker, who has experience with similar projects in Iraq and Libya.
  • The cost of this project is 350,000 euros.
